Work Experience:

Professor Luo is the current Minister of Gender. She has also served as Minister of Health, Minister of Transport and Communications, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Minister of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs. The Honorable Professor Nkandu Luo is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and has served as Head of Pathology and Microbiology at the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka Zambia. Apart from her training in Microbiology and Immunology, she pursued studies in Immunopathology of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology and Medical Statistics.

Currently she is pursuing a Masters in Public Health. Professor Luo has carried out a lot of research on HIV/AIDS, T.B, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases. She has been active in teaching of both undergraduate, postgraduate, biomedical and nursing students. She has not only been active in research and teaching but also in programming. She established the National AIDS Control programme and this programme was later transformed in the National AIDS Council.

She established the National Blood Transfusion Services and the Voluntary Counseling Services (VCT) and supported the establishment of the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT). The establishment of the National Blood Transfusion services in Zambia saw the separation of blood Transfusion from Laboratory services. She established the Infectious Diseases project, the Radio-immunoassay Laboratory and initiated the development of the cancer Hospital at the University Teaching Hospital. Professor Luo established the Infection Control programme which has become a national programme. She contributed to policy development such as the Blood, HIV/AIDS and Laboratory services both in Zambia and other Countries in Africa. She has published many articles in various journals, contributed to books on HIV/AIDS, T.B, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases.

She has spoken at may internal conferences, congress and forums on HIV/AIDS, T.B, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases around the world. Professor Luo has been  President of the Pathological Society of Southern, Eastern and Central Africa, Vice President of Society of AIDS in Africa, Secretary of Microbiology Society in Zambia. She was the convener of the International Conference on STIs and HIV/AIDS in Africa (ICASA). She is the recipient of many awards and also the founder of the Tasintha Programme, an organization that Transforms sex workers, the Society for Women and AIDS in Zambia (SWAAZ), a programme that has been working on women and children's issues in the light of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. She recently initialed the Campaign on child marriage in Zambia.
